ITV are looking for families who may have got stuck in a rut & developed habits where they eat their meals in front of the box rather than engaging in conversations together as a family. They want families looking to improve their culinary skills to help them achieve family bliss at dinnertime, and hopefully make tv dinners a thing of the past.
If you know of any families that might be interested in this please pass on a copy of the attached application form send it in (address on the flyer),
Firefighters’ Family Learning Project
Important safety messages aimed at making Walsall a safer place to live and work are being spelt out to children and their families as part of an innovative course being run by West Midlands Fire Service supported by partner agencies.
Walsall Fire Station has received funding to run a family learning project until July 2011 giving children, aged 11 to 18, and their families the chance to learn about the role of a firefighter and the dangers they constantly face because of the anti-social behaviour of a small minority.
The family learning project follows the structure of the first week’s training undertaken by firefighters and can be taken over two weekends or a week. The course covers a variety of issues including team building, road safety and fire safety.
Everyone who completes the course will take part in a passing out parade in front of their family and friends together with leading figures from the local community including Borough Commander Mick Birch, the Mayor of Walsall, Councillor John O’Hare and representatives from West Midlands Police.
Referrals can be made to the scheme by partners for a variety of reasons. Among those who refer children and have introduced their own separate course as part of the project is the Walsall Active Youth Team who work with overweight and obese children to help them lead a healthy lifestyle.
Part of their work now involves highlighting the importance of exercise and healthy eating for a firefighter to ensure they are fit and active enough to carry out their duties.

Courses will be available until July 2011.

Funding for Summer Playschemes
The Hilden Charitable Fund has announced that application forms for its Summer Playscheme Grants Programme, to help community groups run Summer Playschemes for the benefit of children from refugee and ethnic minority families, will be available from February 2010. Funding of up to £1,000 is available for Summer Playschemes for children aged 5 - 18 years lasting for 2 - 6 weeks with strong volunteer support. The funding is available to voluntary agencies with an income of less than £150,000.
During the previous year, the Hilden Charitable Fund allocated £20,000 for a play scheme programme. 21 projects were funded. Applications from organisations working with refugee and immigrant communities were given priority and most projects funded were based in Greater London. In addition to the Summer Playschemes the Hilden Charitable Fund provides grants to community and voluntary organisations for projects and activities which are unlikely to raise funds from public sources.
